Answer Capsules
Answer Capsules are self-contained 40-60 word paragraphs written with definitive language and zero outbound links, placed in the first 30% of a page. They are designed to be extracted verbatim by AI engines and are the core content format of Extraction Pressure.
Rules for Answer Capsules
- Definitive language — Use "X is" not "X can be." AI engines prefer authoritative statements they can quote directly.
- Zero links — No hyperlinks inside the capsule. Links disrupt AI extraction parsers and reduce citation probability.
- 40-60 words — Short enough to fit in an AI answer block, long enough to be substantive and self-contained.
- First 30% placement — Must appear in the top third of the page content where AI crawlers focus their extraction.
Before vs After
Before (weak): "There are many ways you could potentially improve your SEO, and some experts suggest that structured data might help with visibility in some cases."
After (answer capsule): "Structured data is the single most impactful technical SEO factor for AI engine visibility. Sites with complete @graph JSON-LD score +16 points higher on technical SEO and +14 points higher on GEO visibility in Rankeo's 501-site benchmark."
